Many homeowners love the warmth and character of a wood mantle - and the good news is, you don't have to give it up for a modern ethanol fireplace. Here's how to do it safely.

Ethanol fireplaces produce a real, clean flame with no flue needed - making them ideal for custom installations. Pairing one with a wood mantle (just like the beautiful dark oak surround in the photo) is absolutely possible when you follow these three rules.

Final Solution

Line the niche with non-flammable material

The firebox cavity - the opening where the burner lives - must be fully enclosed in non-combustible material. Concrete, natural brick, or stone tile are all excellent choices. They handle high radiant temperatures without degrading, so the structural surround stays safe and intact over years of use.

Keep a safe clearance distance

Wood must never be positioned too close to the niche opening. The standard minimum is 7–8 inches horizontally on each side, and 11–15 inches vertically above the niche. These clearances give heat room to dissipate before it reaches the combustible wood frame.

7–8 in sides · 11–15 in above

Recess the burner into the wall

When the burner is fully set into the wall - rather than projecting outward - the majority of heat travels inward toward the masonry, not outward toward the room. This dramatically lowers the thermal exposure on your wood mantle, making the entire setup both safer and more efficient.

Heat goes into wall, not mantle

The data speaks for itself. At the minimum 7-inch side gap, the wood surface reads just 27 °C - barely above room temperature. At 11 inches above the niche, 53 °C is warm to the touch but far below wood's ignition point of ~260 °C. Add a couple more inches and the temperature drops to near-ambient. Follow the three rules, and a wood mantle with an ethanol fireplace isn't just safe - it's a stunning, timeless combination.

Professional tip: Temperature readings may vary based on your specific burner output, room ventilation, and mantle depth. Always consult a qualified installer for your exact configuration before finalizing the build.
