The defining characteristic of bioethanol as a media wall fuel is its vent-free combustion. Bioethanol is produced from fermented plant matter (corn, sugarcane, potatoes) and burns cleanly, requiring no external flue, balanced-flue terminal, or gas-safe certified pipework. This freedom from structural requirements is what makes the format accessible to urban apartments, rented homes, and commercial interiors that would otherwise be excluded from real-flame heating.

What Materials Do You Need for a Bioethanol Media Wall?

Material specification is where most DIY media wall projects fail. Bioethanol flames reach temperatures of 600–900°C at the burner aperture, meaning the surrounding structure must be genuinely non-combustible - not merely 'heat-resistant'.

Structural Frame

The cavity housing the bioethanol burner must be constructed from a non-combustible structural material. Standard options include:

Concrete backer board (cement board): the most widely specified solution. Provides structural rigidity, fire resistance to 1,200°C+, and takes tile or stone finishes directly.

Brick or block: suitable for new-build or major retrofit applications where wall depth allows.

Steel stud framing with cement board infill: permits the 250 mm wall depth achievable with slim burner profiles.

Standard plasterboard - even fire-rated variants - is not suitable as a primary structural liner directly adjacent to an open bioethanol flame. It may be used for the wider media wall surround beyond the burner zone, provided it maintains the manufacturer's minimum separation distance.

Facing Materials

The aesthetic surface of the media wall surrounding the burner must also be non-combustible. Proven specification choices include:

Natural stone (marble, limestone, slate): premium finish, excellent heat mass, zero combustion risk.

Ceramic or porcelain tile: industry standard, available in large-format panels for a seamless aesthetic.

Micro-cement render: increasingly popular in contemporary projects; requires application to a cement board substrate, not plasterboard.

Steel or brushed metal inserts: used for the immediate burner surround frame in bespoke installations.

Materials to avoid near the burner zone: untreated timber, MDF (even 'fire retardant' grades), wallpaper, painted plasterboard, acrylic or polymer panels. These are categorically unsuitable within the minimum clearance zones specified by bioethanol burner manufacturers.

How to Design a Bioethanol Fire Media Wall: 4 Layout Options

Choose the plan that suits you best.

Option 1 - Recessed TV, Open Burner

The television is set 10 cm back into the wall above the burner. Minimum 60 cm clearance from the burner top to TV underside. The recess shields the TV from radiant heat and produces a clean, flush aesthetic. Best suited to new-build projects where wall depth permits.

Option 2 - Flush TV, Enclosed Burner with Heat Shelf

The TV sits flush on the wall surface; the burner is enclosed within a non-combustible box with a closed top panel. A non-combustible mantle shelf is fitted between the burner and the TV. Minimum 60 cm clearance maintained. This is the most common retrofit solution and the configuration Afirebox recommends for automatic burner models in existing stud-wall structures.

Option 3 - TV on Separate Wall Plane

The fireplace occupies a lower section; the TV is mounted on an adjacent wall or ceiling arm. Heat management is simplified. Most practical in L-shaped or open-plan living spaces where two focal points are architecturally coherent.

Option 4 - Floor-to-Ceiling Feature Wall, TV Centre

The entire wall is dressed with stone or tile; the bioethanol burner sits at mid-height; the TV is centred above at 100 cm clearance (no enclosure required). A full-height installation demands careful structural planning but produces the most dramatic visual result. Common in hotel lobbies and high-end residential reception rooms.
